(n) 18 is the numerical equivalent of the word “Chai,” which in Hebrew translates to “life.” It’s traditional (on the occasion of a birthday, wedding, bris, etc., or when giving to charity) to give the gift of money in multiples of $18. The belief is that, in doing so, one is gifting the recipient a long and healthy life.
